Background
Some of the smiling faces at Kondanani
The activities of Kondanani were launched by the former President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Bakili Muluzi. Kondanani has various children's homes and villages:
- Caring Hands Infant Home
- Kondanani Children's Village
- Madalo Children's Village
There are 178 children in total, currently all below the age of 13. Kondanani is an expanding project .
The need for the establishment of the orphanage arose due to the high rate of HIV/Aids infection in the country, which is continuing to rob many children of their parents. The extended family system in Malawi has largely collapsed, and HIV has become the single biggest cause of death among Malawians between the ages of 15 and 49 years old (the child-bearing years for women).
Due to the fact that many other orphanages would not admit babies because of the cost, and the fact that it is labour-intensive, Kondanani embarked on admitting such babies rather than leaving them to die in the villages. The first baby was admitted to Caring Hands Infant Home on 7 November 1998.
Our criteria for selecting the children are:
- that all our children come from poor families,
- only babies below the age of 6 months are admitted,
- every child is either affected or infected by the HIV/Aids pandemic.
What we do
We at Kondanani are passionately driven to give a safe haven to all children entering the gates of our premises. We provide food and shelter to the children in a loving and caring atmosphere, at the various homes and villages we have at Kondanani. We educate our children at Kondanani to have them grow not only in reason and intellect, but also spiritually and in moral conduct. We also provide health care for our big family, so we all grow healthy and strong physically as well. Click the link below to find out more.
Our Mission
To create within the child an awareness of belonging, to promote an environment of love and care, giving them an opportunity to be educated, which leads them to self reliance and self respect, so that they may take up the responsibility of their own identity as they grow towards adulthood.
Our Motto
We don't keep children, but love and care for children.
Our Goal
To hear the children say when they have grown up:
I had a happy child hood in spite of being an orphan. I have had a great education, I am a stable and whole person in spirit, soul and body.
Adoption
We have an agreement with a Dutch Adoption Agency and children are being adopted by Dutch Couples on a regular basis.
Procedures And Integrity
We currently have on staff 9 missionaries from the UK, Australia, Holland, Denmark and South Africa, who are all self-supporting. We also have a large number of Malawian staff working with us: on average, 150. The employment of just one person in Malawi supports, on average, ten people within their extended family.
Kondanani is registered under the laws of Malawi as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) and is a registered and a paid-up member of Congoma, which is the umbrella body for NGOs (membership of which is a legal requirement) and we are a member of the NGO Board, a government instituted body. We work according to the laws of the Republic of Malawi in every area, and we work with each member of staff according to the labour laws of Malawi.
Kondanani is a registered section 21 company (a none profit company) in the republic of South Africa. In the United Kingdom and Netherlands, it is registered as a Charity, and Kondanani also has representation in Australia and the USA
Kondanani runs like a well-oiled machine. We have:
- Stock control measures for each house, the pantries and the storeroom for equipment and tools, and we follow up on this every month.
- We have a HR department with full documentation of all the staff as is required by the Labour Office
- A proper accounting system to ensure that it is easy to give an account of the finances at all times, and
- Full documentation of our children from the day they arrived to date, including birth certificates, all medical records and a child protection policy.
