MADALO CHILDREN VILLAGE
A 50-acre property was recently bought and is called "Madalo" which means "blessing". On it is a huge colonial house with 10 bedrooms. The entire building has been reroofed and the house has been renovated. Part of the house is used as a primary school and is called "Lewis Chikhwaza Christian Academy". It has become a school to be proud of. There are two classes at present. The class rooms are well equipped and the children are doing an amazing job at school.
At some stage in the future the building will need to be extended for it to hold 200 students at one time.
28 children are being taught at the academy at present.
Phase 1 of Madalo Village will be built on approximately 6 acres. We started work on this part of the land last year in May (2005).
The children of 6 - 11 years of age will have their home there.
The building of the first home has been completed, 12 children are living there. House no. 2 is under construction and is at roof high. A play ground was erected for the children with funds raised by a school in Holland.
We envisage that there will be 200 children at "Madalo Village" in the future.
We will have high school facilities and university in the future. The teaching method we use has all that included in it's system.
Half way houses will have to be built for the children, which will by them be adolescents, to live in until they get married. That is the way it would be in any Malawian family.
One thing what I found so beautiful was the following: Our children, who have a reward system and earn some money as a result, can go and buy from the school shop. A few weeks ago they decided that they would not buy for them selves, but for the children in the villages they visit on a regular basis. They understood that they had so much more than those children. they kept there word and as a result the village children were so blessed by our children. That makes me cry and smile at the same time.
Also on Madalo is our headoffice. We have moved from the City of Blantyre to our own land here at Bvumbwe. Savings on time and petrol.
We have had to increase our admin staff by two local people. With 128 staff members there is quite a lot of salaries and wages and HR work to be done There has not been a big staff turn over, we have had to fire a few people because of theft, and a few nannies for sleeping on night duty in the baby nursery. We have employed several new members .
