Hundreds of children are orphaned or abandoned in Malawi everyday. HIV/AIDS
has reached epidemic levels. Mothers who have contracted HIV often die during
child birth. Those that don't die, often abandon their children in the hope
that they will be found by someone who will be able to care for them. The
extended family, once so prevalent in the African culture, has been eroded
due to poverty and HIV/AIDS.
This has left an enormous burden on those remaining. Kondanani, a non-governmental
Christian organization, was established in November 1998 to offer hope to
the orphaned children of Malawi.
The activities of Kondanani where launched by the former president of the
republic of Malawi, his excellency Dr. Bakili Muluzi. The first baby was
admitted to "Caring Hands infant home" on the November 7th, 1998.
Kondanani has now (September 2006) three children's homes/villages:
There are 125 children in total (September 2006), all below the age of 8.
In ten years time we see 600 children at Kondanani.
Currently Kondanani's head office is situated at Madalo children's village.
The need for the establishment of the orphanage arose due to the high rate
of HIV/aids infection in the country, which robbed many children of their
parents. The extended family system had collapsed, and HIV had become the
single largest cause of death among Malawians between the ages of 15-49 years,
the child bearing years for women.
Due to the fact that many other orphanages would not admit babies because
of the cost, and that it is labour intensive, Kondanani embarked on admitting
such babies rather than leave them to die in the villages.
Our criteria is that all our children must come from poor families. Only
babies below the age of 6 months are admitted. Every child is either affected
or infected by the HIV/aids pandemic.
Our mission statement is: Belonging, love, care and education.
Our motto is: We don't keep children, but love and care for children.
More houses, including a high school, trade school and whatever else is necessary
for the education of the children. Higher education such as university will
be also on these premises with residences for the students. This project
can be expanded and more staff is needed in order to meet this need.
Finally, Kondanani runs like a well oiled machine. We have a large number
of Malawian staff working with us. The employment of just one person in Malawi,
supports on average, 10 people within their extended family. We have 10 volunteers
from the UK, Australia, Holland and South Africa on staff, who are all self
supporting.
We are registered under the laws of Malawi as a non-governmental organisation,
registered and a paid up member of Congoma, which is the umbrella body for
ngo's. Membership is a legal requirement. We work according to the laws of
the republic of Malawi in every area of the work and we work with each member
of staff according to the labour laws of Malawi.
We have a proper accounting system to ensure that it is simple to give account
of the finances and we have full documentation of our children from the day
they arrived to date, including birth certificates and all medical records.
